The creative agency Being There approached us to create brand music for Dr Oetker’s humorous new Big Americans campaign, about the reward of enjoying a pizza after a hard day's work. The two videos depict scenes of people engaging in playful activities and reveal the behind-the-scenes hard work being done by people instead of machines. This hard work theme had to be reflected in our music.
Bringing in a songwriter, we wrote a couple of short worker’s songs with influences from country and blues, genres that resonate with the rugged and savory style of Big Americans. The track needed to be catchy and reflective of the campaign’s humorous and hard-working spirit. That’s why we ended up with a song which can be best described as a Johnny Cash sea shanty. Repetitive, easy to hum along to and weird in a funny way.
Then we added as much country elements to the song as we could. For example, we invited guitar player Floris Bosma to add some Americana guitar licks and we recorded someone playing the jaw harp. All of this adds up to a memorable brand song that’s tough, yet playful and makes you want to grab some pizza after a hard day’s work.
